To Sign or Not to Sign: Guidance for Title IX Coordinators

An ATIXA Tip of the Week by Kayleigh Baker, J.D., and Brett A. Sokolow, J.D.

As Title IX Coordinators, the decision of whether to sign formal complaints is one of significant responsibility and influence. When possible, Title IX Coordinators should strive to respect the autonomy of complainants; however, certain factors may require the Title IX Coordinator to sign the complaint on behalf of the complainant, thereby initiating the Title IX formal grievance process. This determination requires thoughtful consideration to balance institutional priorities against practical realities, the needs of complainants, and compliance with federal regulations.

We recently explored this topic during a members-only Time with IX community event. Below, we capture the key insights from the discussion and offer practical guidance and actionable takeaways to help you navigate your work with confidence and care.
