Title VI Compliance Foundations Level One for Educational Settings

10:00am-5:00pm ET

This one-day course, Title VI Compliance Foundations Level One for Educational Settings, provides an in-depth examination of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, and national origin in programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance. The course focuses on the application of Title VI in educational settings, exploring its implications for school districts, colleges, and universities. Expert faculty will explore compliance requirements, policy development, and enforcement mechanisms to ensure educational equity in alignment with these laws. Key topics include the scope of Title VI, the role of the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights (OCR), policy development, procedures for handling complaints, and recent OCR resolution agreements.

Title VI Compliance Foundations Level Two: Best Practices for Title VI Coordinators in Educational Settings

10:00am-5:00pm ET

Title VI Compliance Foundations Level Two, is a one-day certification course that, in combination with Title VI Compliance Foundations Level One, prepares leaders in K-12 schools and higher education institutions with the knowledge and skills to effectively implement and manage a Title VI Compliance program. Participants will gain a deep understanding of reporting and intake procedures, resolution processes, prevention education, and compliance assessment to effectively address race, color, and national origin discrimination.

Through interactive discussions and case studies, participants will explore response options for Title VI complaints, including applying supportive measures and remedies and navigating formal and informal resolution processes while upholding parties’ sometimes-competing rights. This training also explores the intersection of Title VI and free speech, to address the complex balancing of compliance and honoring First Amendment protections that is necessary.

Further, this course highlights proactive prevention strategies, including engaging students and employees in anti-discrimination education and assessing school/institutional compliance through climate surveys, audits, and action planning. Finally, participants will learn best practices for maintaining accurate documentation and ensuring school/institutional accountability.

This course prepares Title VI Coordinators to effectively fulfill their roles and provides best practice considerations to promote learning and work environments free from discrimination. It is suitable for Civil Rights and Title VI Compliance coordinators and practitioners, educational administrators, school/district and institutional leaders, policymakers, and legal professionals.

Title VI & Civil Rights Investigation Foundations Level One for Educational Settings

10:00am-5:00pm ET (both days)

Title VI and Civil Rights Investigation Foundations Level One is the initial two-day course in ATIXA’s Investigator curriculum for Investigators, Title VI Coordinators looking to acquire the fundamental skills necessary to conduct civil rights investigations. Expert faculty members will guide participants through an in-depth exploration of the types of discrimination they may investigate, each phase of an investigation process as prescribed by ATIXA’s “Process B”, including critical topics for each phase and implications for those investigating or overseeing a civil rights compliant.

This course will explore examples and unique considerations of investigating disparate treatment, disparate impact, hostile environment, and retaliation complaints. By the end of the course, participants will be proficient in all stages of the civil rights investigation process, ready to uphold federal compliance, protect individuals’ rights, and contribute to thorough and fair investigation.

In combination with the included Civil Rights Fundamentals, the accompanying online pre-learning experience, Title VI and Civil Rights Investigation Foundations Level One provides the essential knowledge, skills, and best practices for success as a full-time or part-time Civil Rights Investigator.

Free Speech and Responding to Protests and Activism in Educational Settings

This one-day course, Free Speech and Responding to Protests and Activism in Educational Settings, provides a comprehensive overview of the complexities involved in navigating tensions between freedom of expression and ensuring an educational environment free from harassment and discrimination. ATIXA’s expert faculty will explore schools’ responsibilities in responding to protests, preventing and addressing disruptions, and ensuring that all voices are heard in a respectful and lawful manner. Topics include understanding the limits of free speech, addressing hate speech and harassment, protest management strategies, referral considerations to other institutional support systems or processes, and institutional legal obligations. Through case studies and practical exercises, participants will gain the skills needed to respond to Title VI discrimination and harassment complaints in a timely and equitable manner.
